An Argyll Christmas: where to go for festivals and lights!

An Argyll Christmas: where to go for festivals and lights!
Winter festivals, twinkling Christmas lights and carol singing under the stars – communities across Argyll & the Isles celebrate the festive season with an array of magical events. From Christmas lights celebrations to candlelit carol concerts, here’s where to go for festivals and lights in Argyll this Christmas. Combine your visit with a coastal ramble, a hearty lunch and a festive drink by the fire, and enjoy Argyll’s stunning winter scenery as you explore the area.

Winter Festivals
Wrap up warm and celebrate the festive season at one of Argyll’s winter festivals. The annual Oban Winter Festival (18th to 27th November) is already well under way. This 10-day event is full of seasonal cheer, with markets, parades, ceilidhs, live music, art exhibitions and more at venues throughout Oban. Helensburgh Winter Festival (26th to 27th November) features one of the biggest festive markets in Scotland, with more than 100 stalls and booths, as well as an outdoor skating rink. There’s a full programme of entertainment throughout both days, as well as children's rides, Santa's Grotto, the Santa Dash and reindeer.

Dervaig Does Christmas (8th December) is a much smaller event, but it packs a big festive punch. You'll find live music, craft competitions, market stalls, carols, mulled wine and more in various venues across the village of Dervaig on the island of Mull.

Christmas Lights
Argyll’s Christmas lights switch on events are big, bright and buzzy! Campbeltown's Lights Switch On (25th November) kicks off a weekend of festive celebrations in the town. Come along for festive fun, shopping, music and a parade. On Mull, the Tobermory Christmas Lights Switch On (25th November) is a lovely local event. The shops open from 6pm offering mulled wine and festive treats and the lights are switched on at 7pm. Dunoon Dazzles (26th November) is a fun-filled day of events leading up to Dunoon's annual Christmas lights switch on. Expect reindeers, Santas, pipe bands, a festive market and live music, plus all-day entertainment for the whole family. For a convivial community event head to the Tarbert Christmas Fair (2nd December). It starts at 4pm with a Christmas Fair followed by a children's lantern parade to the village Christmas tree.

Church services
You’ll find carol concerts and special Christmas services taking place across Argyll. One of the most magical is the Carols By Candlelight service (19th December) in the beautiful Marble Chapel at Mount Stuart. It’s a wonderful evening of traditional carols, readings and choral ensembles, duets and solo performances.

Travel and accommodation
If you’re planning to spend Christmas in Argyll, then you’ll be pleased to hear that many hotels in the region offer special seasonal rates and packages. You’ll need to check ferry timetables if you’re planning to travel on or around Christmas Day.
