Why Argyll & the Isles is perfect for a romantic luxury break in Scotland!

Why Argyll & the Isles is perfect for a romantic luxury break in Scotland!
Forget the clichés of candles and flowers. A romantic break in Argyll & the Isles has so much more to offer. With thousands of miles of coastline, countless beaches, wonderful islands, incredible dark skies, a sense of history and endless opportunities for magical dining experiences, this beautiful region of the west coast of Scotland is utterly seductive. Add to that the fabulous range of luxury accommodation for couples, and you have all the ingredients for an unforgettable romantic break.

A good place to start would be Portavadie on the banks of Loch Fyne, where you’ll find stylish contemporary accommodation, fine dining and a luxury spa. The infinity pool overlooking the loch is achingly romantic. The Couples’ Retreat is the ultimate expression of Portavadie’s romantic side. This secluded eco-retreat comes complete with wood-burning stove, private deck and double bath. After a day spent exploring the local coastline and forests, what better way to unwind than sinking into the bubbles of a bath that’s made for two? For five-star luxury on the banks of Loch Lomond book yourself a romantic break at Cameron House. Relax in the spa and dine at the Michelin-starred Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond restaurant. Another option is Loch Melfort Hotel at Arduaine. With uninterrupted sea views from every bedroom, roaring log fires and deep sofas in the lounges, this is a really special place to unwind with your partner. The hotel’s two restaurants both offer impeccably prepared, locally sourced seafood.

Or how about a romantic island escape? An Taigh Osda is a luxury boutique hotel on the beautiful Hebridean island of Islay. Enjoy dinner in the restaurant overlooking Loch Indaal and a dram by the fire before retiring to your sumptuous room. The tiny island of Eriska near Oban is home to the luxurious Isle of Eriska Hotel & Spa with its Michelin- starred restaurant. Eriska itself is a 300-acre paradise. Wander freely, look out for wildlife and enjoy spectacular views. Mount Stuart on the island of Bute is another impossibly romantic place. This opulent neo-Gothic palace features magnificent design and craftsmanship. The beautiful Marble Chapel is possibly the ultimate place to get married in Scotland. You can book the entire house for a wedding with luxurious overnight accommodation. If you aren’t looking to get hitched, you can still enjoy a romantic break at Mount Stuart as there are a number of self-catering cottages in the grounds.

For something completely different you could glamp it up at Machrihanish Holiday Park on Kintyre’s wild west coast in a luxury furnished bell tent. Sink into the giant double bed and drink in the views across Machrihanish Bay to Islay and Jura.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to romantic dining in Argyll. You’ll find wonderful restaurants in dreamy coastal locations. Argyll is renowned for its seafood. What could be more romantic than sharing a bottle of wine and some of Scotland’s freshest seafood while watching the sun set in the west? Head north to Port Appin on the shores of Loch Linnhe to discover the Pierhouse Hotel and its award-winning seafood restaurant. The Pierhouse is all about fresh, local produce simply cooked to perfection and served with an unbeatable sea view. The lobsters and crabs are kept mouth-wateringly fresh in creels at the end of the pier. Crinan Hotel is another good choice for romantic dining in Argyll. The hotel’s Westward Restaurant offers a five-course menu with the benefit of sunset views. Take a pre-dinner stroll along the historic Crinan Canal. Inver on Loch Fyne was recently voted AA ‘ Restaurant of the Year – Scotland’. The food is sensational and the location on Lachlan Bay overlooking the ruined Lachlan Castle is stunning.

Whether you’re a traditional sunset, candlelit dinner and log fire type or someone who’d prefer to take your partner on a more active, adventure break, there’s something for romantics of all persuasions in Argyll. The coastline of Argyll is dotted with beaches and bays, from wildly romantic and rugged beaches to dreamy sandy bays that stretch for miles. What’s more, you’ll often have them all to yourself. Discover magnificent castles, glorious gardens and fabulous forests as you explore the area. You could even take a bespoke guided tour to discover Argyll’s more remote areas. Wild Argyll provides walking or kayaking trips to unspoiled places tucked off the beaten track. For an unforgettable experience get airborne with Loch Lomond Seaplanes. What could be more romantic that soaring high above Loch Lomond and getting a bird’s eye view of Argyll’s mountains, lochs and glens? When you disembark you’ll be treated to a glass of champagne by the dock. And finally, Argyll is one of the best places in Scotland to watch the night sky. Walk outside on a clear night anywhere in Argyll and the canopy of stars will take your breath away.

So if it’s time for a starry-eyed escape, set your heart on the incomparable, impossibly romantic region of Argyll.
