Get switched on! Where to see the Christmas lights in Argyll & the Isles

Get switched on! Where to see the Christmas lights in Argyll & the Isles
Across Argyll & the Isles, towns, villages and communities are getting ready to herald the start of the festive season by switching on their Christmas lights. The events range from big, all-day celebrations to small, intimate affairs. So wrap up warm, enjoy a glass of mulled wine and get ready to light up for Christmas! The countdown begins this weekend…

Friday 24th November 2017

The festivities kick off with the Helensburgh Christmas Lights Switch-On in Colquhoun Square at the heart of the town. It promises to be a spectacular occasion with around 160 light features on lamp-posts and decorated trees around the town centre making up the display. The entertainment starts at 6pm, when the HMS Neptune Volunteer Band will take to the stage and play a selection of jolly Christmas tunes to get everyone in the mood. You can continue the seasonal celebrations the following weekend (2nd and 3rd December) at the Helensburgh Winter Festival. You’ll find reindeer, a festive market, outdoor skating rink and a full programme of entertainment.

For a lovely community event, head to Tighnabruaich on Argyll’s Secret Coast for the Tighnabruaich Christmas Lights Switch-On and Festive Market. Gather at 5pm to enjoy mulled wine, mince pies, carol singing, kids' art activities at Tig Gallery, Santa’s Grotto and more. Botanica will be serving up burgers and German hotdogs from an outdoor BBQ. Out on the island of Mull, Tobermory Christmas Lights is another community affair. Tobermory's Main Street shops will be open from 6pm offering mulled wine and festive treats, there will be a visit from Santa and then the lights switch on at 7pm.

Campbeltown's Lights Switch-On starts a weekend of festive celebrations in the town. Come along for festive fun, shopping, music and a parade.

Saturday 25th November 2017

Dunoon Dazzles is a fun-filled day of events leading up to Dunoon's annual Christmas lights switch on. The town’s Main Street will be buzzing, with reindeers, Santas, pipe bands, a festive market and all-day entertainment for the whole family. Enjoy some festive swing with The Swing Cats, who have performed most recently with The BBC Big Band for Radio 2, and a special Frozen dance routine from the Tina Cairns School of Dancing. Local ceilidh band Heron Valley will take to the stage for the final countdown to switching on the Christmas lights. In addition to the festivities on the street, Dunoon Burgh Hall is hosting Cowal Craft Forum's Christmas Craft Fair from 11am-4pm.

The Oban Winter Festival is well underway and the town’s Christmas lights are already twinkling. The festival, which runs until 26th November, is jam-packed with seasonal fun, from whisky tasting to festive markets, ceilidhs to ice skating.

Friday 1st December

For a convivial community event head to the Tarbert Christmas Fair. It starts at 4pm with a Christmas market, followed by a children's lantern parade to the village Christmas tree.

Carol Concerts

You’ll find carol concerts and special Christmas services taking place across Argyll. One of the most magical is the Carols By Candlelight service which takes place on the 18th of December in the beautiful Marble Chapel at Mount Stuart on Bute. It’s a wonderful evening of traditional carols, readings and choral ensembles, duets and solo performances.
