Gardens

With its mild climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream, Argyll and the Isles provides the perfect growing conditions for a riot of native and exotic plants. Over 20 glorious gardens are set amid its spectacular coastal landscape, many with stunning views out to sea. The gardens provide colour and interest throughout the year, from carpets of bluebells in spring to flame-red canopies in autumn.

A number of the gardens are part of historic estates, so you can discover history as well as enjoy the beauty of blooming rhododendrons, blazing azaleas and towering trees. Mount Stuart on Bute, for example, has 300 acres of vibrant gardens, wilderness and woodland that have been nurtured and enhanced over time.

Other islands are home to some of the finest gardens. Achamore Gardens on Gigha offer a tranquil haven where you can stroll through natural woodlands, while Colonsay House Gardens provide a huge array of plants amid stunning surroundings. Back on the mainland, Benmore Botanic Gardens has a magnificent mountain setting, over 300 species of rhododendron and a spectacular avenue of giant redwoods. You could easily spend a few days exploring the garden delights of An Cala, Ardmaddy and Arduaine in and around Oban.

Glorious Gardens of Argyll & Bute is a great place to find out more about gardens in Argyll & The Isles. Scotland's Gardens is another fantastic source of information about gardens that are open to the public in the region.
