Dunollie Castle and the 1974 House

The superbly situated Dunollie Castle, standing guard over Oban Bay, is to this day an iconic monument to the history of the area.

For more than 1000 years, the Clan Chiefs and Lords of Lorn ruled large areas of Argyll and the Isles from Dunollie. Today it remains the seat and ancestral home of Clan MacDougall and is home of the renowned Hope MacDougall Collection.

The museum, castle and grounds are great to explore. You can learn about the fascinating history of the castle, the MacDougall family and life on the west coast of Scotland.

Explore the castle and historic grounds with woodland walks, gardens and stunning views over Kerrera, North Lorn and to the islands beyond. The lovely Dunollie Woodland Trail will lead you to the mysterious hidden Willow Garden.

The 1745 House was the first Laird's house built when the family moved from the castle, and its story is enmeshed with the Jacobite rising of that same year. You can see how it functioned both as an 18th Laird's house and as servants' quarters.

There's also a cafe selling delicious home-made soup, sandwiches and cakes and locally made gifts.
