Lagavulin Distillery

Lagavulin Distillery can be found sitting in the beautiful bay of Lagavulin at the south of Islay near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. It’s thought to be one of the longest-established distilleries in the country. Distilling on the site took place as early as 1742 and by the late 18th century there were up to 10 illicit stills operating in the area. In 1882 the remaining two amalgamated to form Lagavulin and by 1875 it was producing up to 75,000 gallons of whisky.

Lagavulin is one of Scotland’s most famous whiskies, characterized by a strong peat flavour and iodine overtones – or a ‘good dose of Islay peat and crisp sea salt’. Find out more about the history and process and sample a few drams by taking a tour of the distillery. The Premium Tasting takes you through some of the different ages and maturation styles of the extended family range, while the Warehouse Demonstration examines the journey of the spirit through the maturation process. Lagavulin legend, Iain MacArthur, hosts some of these.
